Spectacularly unreliable. How can something so simple give so much trouble? All there is in it is a bimetallic strip and a couple of contacts. Tends to stick, resulting in high temperature and fuel level readings. If anyone fancies making a solid state replacement, I'll buy a few.

Does it have the Lucas electronic ignition, with the coil mounted on top of the amplifier? These are well known for failing when hot.

Not an ex British Army vehicle, but if they had them, I suppose this is how they would look: http://www.glencoyne.co.uk/storage/myk1.jpg This is one I have just finished preparing for a customer - rebuilt engine, new wiring loom, winch with front and rear mountings. The paint was already on it when ...

I made a bad mistake - thinking I could set up a Land Rover restoration business and a V8 club at the same time. The business took off a bit faster than I expected, my workshop is now booked solid into September and I am working 60-70 hours a week just trying to catch up. The result is that the club...

What you have is a 'Pulsair' air injection system, fitted to various V8s. My first Stage 1 had it. Its main function on a Stage 1 is to make access to the spark plugs more difficult. Apart from that I don't think it has any real effect, so you can safely remove it. RPI (V8 specialists in Norfolk) se...

David, I have now looked through all my piles of parts and I do not have the bits you need. Hopefully the ones Terry has will be suitable.

What kind of Range Rover are you looking for? I've got a very solid 1983 5-door automatic, and I'd be interested in taking the Stage 1 in part-exchange.

I bought a sports exhaust system from Rimmer Bros of Lincoln to fit to a 90 V8. It was a complete system with tubular steel manifolds etc, all in stainless. Fitted beautifully and sounded fabulous. The only criticism I have is that the kit didn't include any of the rubber mounts or hangers. You also...

You got all that - LPG and all - for fifteen hundred quid? Bargain of the year.

Looks like the engine sits fairly well forward - not far off the position for a genuine V8. So if you wanted to swap the autobox for an R380, you might be in with a chance of getting it to bolt straight in.

Something a bit special

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4619355633 Might be the oldest production Stage 1 in the UK. Remember, the first year's production went for export. And then there's this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4619459877 Nice straight unmolested Station Wa...

Apart from anything else, if we allow guest posting it means that members who forget to log in end up posting as guests. That gets very confusing, very quickly.

At least if the spammers have to sign up before posting it slows them down a bit.

I have thought long and hard about bringing a big pile of spares home from the breaking vehicles you mentioned a couple of weeks a...

That's very interesting. There are some very cheap new Defender bulkheads around at the moment. Perhaps I should start stockpiling them.
