Water with some washing soda (the clue was in the photo) to increase the conductivity, works a treat. I used a much larger version to get the rust off of my disco 2 brake calipers and ARB. I was astonished at just how effective this is, and so simple.

Re: Restoration
Didn't get much done today as I was sorting out an overboost issue with my Disco TD5. Just a tiny bit of filler to tidy the wing ... https://i.postimg.cc/X7gqB66Q/IMG-20230417-151312.jpg ... and got a couple of bits into the electrolysis bath to de-rust https://i.postimg.cc/4xNdz2JZ/IMG-20230417-151...

Re: Restoration
My nut & bolt order arrived today, so managed a couple of hours in the workshop. After a lot of careful measuring and test fitting, etc., I drilled the bolt holes and welded on a pair of captive nuts https://i.postimg.cc/85S3CQyD/IMG-20230415-145503.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/R0fy9VLX/IMG-20230415...

Re: Restoration
Not a lot of progress today, but I did get the welding done. https://i.postimg.cc/L8xmV7jm/IMG-20230412-152225.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/ZRdZ452q/IMG-20230412-152242.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/wBPHCmWP/IMG-20230412-152057.jpg So I now have all the parts ready to drill and fit. https://i.postimg.cc/rpzM...

Re: Restoration
Fabrication day today. When I stripped down the front wings, the steel support pieces were not great having succumbed to corrosion rot. I thought that it would be a good idea to replace these, so decided to make my own replacements. https://i.postimg.cc/7Z9zVGJ2/IMG-20230411-123444.jpg https://i.pos...

Re: Restoration
I found the reason I was having trouble with it not cranking when I turned the key; I hadn't bolted the earth lead at the other end of the loom to the body!

Re: Restoration
Relay is the original Lucas 6RA. I tested it and it seems to be working OK, so I'll now have to check the feed and earth on W1, W2 are good. I thought that I had already done this but I did kind of disappear up the proverbial yesterday chasing through the loom and trying to identify everything. Most...

Re: Restoration
So with a clearer head, I now realise that the circuit diagram is for a ballasted coil, hence the w/p feed from the starter motor. It short circuits the resistor when cranking allowing the primary winding in the coil to run slightly over normal voltage. This is to aid cold starting I believe when ba...

Re: Restoration
What a job trying to decipher a fuzzy wiring diagram that omits all of the "options", has errors, wire colour discrepancies, is in tiny unreadable font, and then trying to trace through the loom having left it half done over a year ago! My head is splitting. What is the function of the whi...

Re: Restoration
Cheers for the offer, I actually meant to say that I got the diagram from the supplement; my mistake. An soft copy would be useful though, email is accounts@cliffordgarrett.co.uk The choke sensor I fitted is an original Land Rover one that I think I got from PA Blanchard here in the UK. Trying to fi...

Re: Restoration
Well finally, after a whole year having to sort out my Discovery 2, and then several aborted attempts, the weather has finally improved enough to get back to work. Didn't do a whole lot though as I spent most of the day trying to identify and remember where the tangle of wires I'd left hanging from ...

Re: Restoration
Did I tell the story about the wind shredded garage tent? I can't remember anymore for the turmoil. To recap, the cover gave up through UV damage and got ripped open in the last lot of storm weather. I struggled to lash something temporary together to try and keep the worst of the rain off of the St...

Re: Restoration
I managed to lash something together with a large DPM sheet I had tucked away. Bit of a struggle on my own but hopefully it will suffice (it won't stand up to a gale) until I can replace the cover. I have replacement on order but no delivery date. The Stage One is also covered with a tarp so fingers...

Re: Restoration
While the Stage One has been patiently waiting for me to sort out my Discovery 2, there has been a bit of weather. Hot sun and UV now followed by a bit of thunder, lightning, and wind! https://i.postimg.cc/zBdMVb8n/IMG-20221024-125717.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/qqzFnJvW/IMG-20221024-125756.jpg Guess w...

Re: Restoration
Blimey, you're welcome. I'm fighting to get my Discovery 2 repaired and back on the road at the moment, so work on the 109 has been temporarily halted. I hope to be able to resume soon.
