Re: Stage 1 rebuild...

No, the photos don't show for me either. How do you know the engine and gearbox are both original to the vehicle? Do you have the numbers listed on registration docs or somewhere, or are you going by condition and originality of how things are looking after 38 years? I ask because my gearbox and fro...

Re: Stage 1 rebuild...

Best wishes with the restoration. I can't see any of your photos I'm afraid. Not used them myself but have seen recommended for radiator refurb: https://vikingradiators.co.uk/

Things have really slowed up what with the winter weather and illness. Re: Restoration

I'll be sorting out the swivel housings and swivels next and then I think I'm going to convert to disc brakes using the Zeus conversion kit. If anyone has anything to advise on the brake conversion then I'd be happy to listen. I've read a fair bit on the subject but it seems like the Zeus kit is str...

Re: Restoration

Do you have access to a spring setter with a forge? Be a good opportunity to have them reset. I don't think they are in need of reset. I could send them all off to Jones Springs here in UK for the full refurb treatment, but quite frankly, if I go to that expense then I'd buy new from them. As far a...

Re: Restoration

Following on, it was leaf spring refurb day. This is a dirty horrible job and quite frankly, if I wasn't trying to do as much as possible myself, and keeping costs comtrolled, I'd just buy new springs. However, I don't think mine are anywhere near as old as the vehicle itself as I suspect that they ...

Re: Restoration

Quick update. I've pressed on with front axle refurb and stripped down. Axle and springs are all off and I've cleaned and oiled the chassis. https://i.postimg.cc/HLjPBYCD/20191028-162942.jpg Obviously already having a galvanised chassis makes a massive difference. Mine is in absolutely great shape a...

Dampers (shock absorbers)

I've removed my front leaf springs and dampers, also steering damper. They all look to be past their sell by as they compress easily and are veeery sloooow to recover. So, I thought I'd seek recommendations for good replacements. It had Munroe Gas Magnums on it but having never driven the vehicle, I...

Re: Restoration

That looks pretty good Geoff, yes, a dark green is the way I'm swaying. Who'd have thought deciding the colour would be so bloomin difficult

Re: Restoration

Got the front brake drums off yesterday to start brake and axle inspection. Seems the shoes and cylinders must have been replaced for MOT before it was sold to the PO, all looked new and very little mileage on them. There is a bit of a leak from one cylinder so I'll need to sort that but otherwise, ...

Re: Restoration

The original colour chart looked so dated that I started thinking about a more current Defender colour. However, I don't want it to look like a Defender so have come back around to thinking that a more original colour would be better. I'm pretty much settled on a dark Bronze Green at the moment, pos...

Re: Restoration

Progress has slowed somewhat for a variety of reasons but got back on it today. Since the weather is changing, temp falling and getting wet, I've missed my window to get the bulkhead painted. I keep changing my mind about colour too (currently thinking green) so I've decided to put that aside and pr...

Re: Restoration

Well, after being slowed by some chronic health issues and the distractions of the Peterborough LRO show, and a few probs with the Discovery 2 to correct, it was back to the Stage 1 restoration. I've completed the skim filler, sanding, and given the bulkhead another coat of epoxy primer. https://i.p...
