Thanks for that I will email him now, We were looking for a fairly heavily indented number that shouls have been easily seen but the way you describe it it seems it needs hunting for.

Hi Just sold my 1981 stage 1 to a gentleman in the Netherlands who insisted that apart from the VIN plate on the bulkhead the chassis number should be stamped on the chassis at the drivers side in front of axle but despite scraping away a lot of schultze we could not find a number stamped anywhere. ...

I would think you would have to prime the pump as the filter has been off for so long although you may get away with it I would not know but I would prime to be on the safe side. Yes its the 4 "splinish" ones ( there are special sockets for these) although I find a standard key fits these ...
